Lore Of Olympus by Rachel Smythe

Lore Of Olympus is a comic currently being posted on webtoon and created by Rachel Smythe. The comic is based on Greek mythology and Gods & Goddesses in a more modern context. I am inspired by her style and also the idea of using Goddesses' to represent pollution or the effects that humans are having on the earth as of right now. I am especially interested in Persephone the goddess of spring and nature. I want to create my own set of Goddesses being affected by the world.

Australian Bushfires

Thinking about sustainability and the environment I can’t help but think of the bushfires in 2020 that affected Australia so badly.

After doing some research into it I have discovered that the change in our climate has made areas in Australia more dry and prone to longer-lasting fires it killed so much of the wildlife and animals off during the 2020 bushfire has forever affected and impacted the environment there.

Experienced Firefighters in Australia have been voicing their concern on this and the ever-changing environment wanting precautions put in place to help with future instants of bushfires.

Air Pollution

Air pollution makes up for the majority of the world's pollution and can increase health risks such as respiratory infections, heart disease, COPD, and stroke, and lung cancer.

In countries such as Bejing, a new condition has been coming more and more commonly known as Bejing cough. In countries like Bejing, it is commonly found that citizens wear face coverings to prevent breathing in as much pollution as possible.

Air pollution is not a recent issue it has increased with environmentalists having grown concerned but there are examples in our history such as the " the great smog of London" in 1952. This smog was so thick and toxic it was reported to kill wildlife and over 4000 people.

Ice Caps Melting

In the last 100 years, it has been reported that our sea level has risen about 6 - 8 inches. Why is this worrying?  That's because a lot of major cities lay in low coastal areas and have the possibility to be covered by the ocean in the future due to the ice caps melting. To put that in a better perspective NASA has said about 9% of the ice has melted in a decade and the thickness f the Arctic has decreased by 40% since the 1960s.

According to the scientists of the US center of atmospheric research they have estimated that by 2040 the Arctic will be free of ice due to current temperature changes. This will be in my lifetime and I will be 39 when this is estimated to happen which is a scary thought.

Not only will this affect the human race but animals will lose the habitat as we are already seeing with heartbreaking photos captured of polar bears stuck.

Water Pollution

The earth is made up of 70% water yet it is heavily mistreated and polluted by society as over 6 billion pounds of rubbish is found in the oceans the majority of this being plastic. 80% of the total pollutants in the ocean are oil, pesticides, untreated sewage, septic tanks, dirt, discharge of nutrients, and so on. This is all done by humans and has a huge impact on sea life and even our own health creating water-born diseases such as cholera and typhoid.

We all see the adverts on our TVs by W.H.O showing us how some societies are still going with unclean water and death rates being high from this. This shows how it impacts humans not only sea life.

From doing my research into sustainability and the pollution in the world I have recently purchased reusable makeup remover wipes instead of purchasing a new pack of disposable ones to help stop a little of what I chuck away.
