Urban decay vs natural decay

Greg Nicotero

Greg Nicotero is an American special effects artist who is most known for his creations on the walking dead franchise. When I thought of urban and natural decay I instantly thought of his work and how he brings nature into the dead more now and how nature is taking back the decay. I also thought about the scenes in the show and how broken and run down the towns and cities have become and rust covers everything.

When thinking about natural decay I wanted to create my own zombie who has been taken over by plant life I’ve been thinking a lot about strawberry plants and how I can document the decay process to help inspire and inform my illustrations.

The Last Of Us

The last of us is a game that was made in 2013 by Sony and that is based on a zombie apocalypse. Unlike the walking dead these zombies were designed with nature in mind and the idea that they will mutate to look like nature and when they die give back to mother nature.

The urban decay in this game is stunning and breathtaking how realistic it all looks and the tiny details within in it. It reminds me a little with how Chernobyl looks like now and contains this uneasy feeling of being abandoned due to crisis yet nature is taking back what it can.

Katie Hollis

@katiehollis_makeup

Katie Hollis is an Instagram makeup artist however the way she uses makeup like paint is nothing I have ever seen before on all social media platforms. Using her face as the canvas for her artwork Katie has created realistic portraits of celebrities such as the singer Yungblud, Harry Styles and Jack Nicholson.

Creating pieces with unconventional mediums such as lipsticks and eyeshadow she captures so much depth and tone with this technique and is able to create realistic portraits on small scale.

I’m feeling inspired by this artist because of her use of colour and the idea of your face being the canvas that I might make my project makeup based.
